act 1

Act 1 lyrics

DEEP LOVE - The ghost of Old Bones sings of his love for Constance, his living lover.

KEEP MY HAND ABOVE YOU - Old Bones stands by, unheard and unseen, as Constance mourns his loss. As she wonders how much longer she must suffer, Old Bones promises to protect her as long as she stays true to him.

FRIEDRICH’S GROOVE - Friedrich is caught flirting with local girls by his jealous lover, Florence. She reminds him of all she does for him, including the unrequited love she offers him.

WHO WE ARE - Florence reminds Friedrich of their shared past, including the sins that bind them together. She sings of how she loves him in a way that no one else could.

BELIEVE IN LOVE - Friedrich denies his belief in love. Constance, who has been eavesdropping, steps forward to defend the idea of love. Compelled by this beautiful stranger’s candor, Friedrich weighs the risk of opening his heart to her.

THE WELL - Constance thinks of the life she wishes she had. Though separated by space, Florence walks a similar path. Both women begin to glimpse a future just ahead of them, a future they deserve.

IS IT TOO LATE - Friedrich contemplates the possibilities of finding love after all

AM I MAD - Constance and Friedrich both begin to let go of their respective pasts as they find hope in the new romance that’s growing between them.

ALL FOR LOVE - Florence stumbles on Constance and Friedrich together. After confronting him, Florence directs her jealousy towards Constance, swearing that she will be watching their every move, all for love.

SURELY RECLAIMED - Friedrich begins to see Constance as a way to let go of his lifelong failure to find redemption. He sees in her a way to move forward in hope.

HOW IT FEELS - Constance and Friedrich pledge their love to one another, choosing love over the heartbreak of their pasts.

LOVE’S BITTER REPROACH - Old Bones appears to Constance, reproaching her for breaking her vows to him. In fear, Constance pledges her faith to Old Bones, even while Friedrich offers her the hope and love she longs for. In anger, Old Bones threatens to harm Friedrich unless Constance ends her relationship with him.

act 2

act 2 lyrics

FOR THE SAKE OF LOVE - Trapped and taunted, Constance weighs an impossible decision. Scared of what harm Old Bones could lay on Friedrich, she revokes her love, believing she is protecting him.

FAIREST OF FRIENDS - Old Bones whispers words of doubt and hatred to Friedrich.

CONSTANCE BE GONE - Rejected by love, Friedrich abandons all hope for peace and happiness. He takes his own life.

TWEEN ME AND THE BREEZE - Constance and Florence mourn Friedrich. Constance blames herself for Friedrich’s death, and rejects Old Bones’ words.

THE RUSE OF OLD BONES - As Florence laments the loss of Friedrich, Old Bones sees opportunity to end Constance’s newfound peace by flooding Florence’s mind with thoughts of revenge.

WHO I AM - Florence is resolved.

THE REPRISE - The dead begin to stir.

ALL THAT'S LEFT - Constance begins to make one last plea to the heavens for relief from her torment, only to realize that the only power left for her to call upon is her own.

SOUR RAIN - Florence and Constance both prepare to avenge Friedrich on the one they solely blame–Florence on Constance and Constance on the very bones of the deceased tyrant who haunts her.

HERE’S MY PICKLE - Old Bones reflects on the surprising strength of Constance, then warns us that it’s too late, and the end is almost near.

THE GREAT GHOSTLY PICKLE - Old Bones urges Florence on to enact revenge while Constance attempts to put Old Bones out of her life forever. The ghost of a spiteful Friedrich appears to an increasingly maddened Constance, who dispatches Florence and reveals herself as Old Bones’ original betrayer. The ghosts of her past finally drag her down to hell.

THE CHANT OF THE DEAD/A LONG WINTER’S REST - A chorus of the dead surrounds Constance in witness of her final deeds.
